Mykonos, GreeceThis upmarket Greek island is a sophisticated, fashionable favourite destination particularly for the gay travellers, and probably because of its popularity it has become reputedly the most expensive of all the islands. Its designer shops, colourful tavernas and throbbing dance clubs are doing a roaring trade, but despite the trendy crowds and a couple of well-attended nudist beaches, the island retains its traditional flavour while its trademark five thatched windmills turn slowly on the hill. Tourists to Mykonos who would like to do some serious sightseeing can visit the archaeological museum on the island, which displays some finds from the necropolis on nearby Rhenia. It is also possible to take a trip across to the uninhabited island of Delos (just six nautical miles away), which is an important World Heritage archaeological site, having been the religious and political centre of the Aegean in ancient times. Explore the temples and the Avenue of the Lions, and see some stunning archaic sculptures in the museum.

Main Mykonos Resort reviews

Agios Ioannis is the beach where the movie Shirley Valentine was filmed. Just 4 km from Mykonos Town, 5 km from the airport and 4.7 km from the port. Next to Agios Ioannis lies Ornos Beach. The peaceful, relaxing resort of Ornos has a wonderful sandy beach that gently slopes into the sea, which makes it ideal for families with young children. There are a few tavernas serving traditional cuisine however nightlife in both these resorts is very low key, for a change of pace Mykonos Town can be reached by bus 2.5kms away.

Mykonos Town: The attractive quayside of Mykonos Town is lined with cafes, bars and restaurants. The small beach forms part of the harbour but doesn't provide very good swimming, however, other very good beaches are nearby, they also offer a full range of watersports. There is plenty of sightseeing to do and at night the town really comes to life where you can party till dawn.

Plati Gialos: The sandy beach at Plati Yialos is perfect for whiling away the days, you can swim in the turquoise waters, sunbathe or simply do nothing. Peace and relaxation are the order of the day here, there are a few local tavernas however for a change of pace Mykonos Town is just 10 minutes away. Mykonos Airport (JMK) 3 km, Archaeological Museum 3 km, Paradise Beach 1 km, The Windmills 3 km, Venice of Mykonos 3 km
